Is it better for a beginner to try and write a play from an original idea or adapt an existing source?

I am a 17 year old who has been reading a lot of plays lately (from Shakespeare to Arthur Miller) and it has inspired me to try to write a play. I am really good at English Literature, so I know I am competent when it comes to writing, but it is just that I prefer writing dialogue than more narrative driven stories, which is why I think it would be a good exercise to try to write a play.

I was reading an article about Andrea Dunbar who had her first play performed at London's Royal Court Theatre when she was only 18 (and she wrote it when she was 15) and it said she had based it on her life, but my life hasn't been eventful enough to write a play about.

I really can't think of an original idea to write a play about at the moment (I have been trying for the last 2 weeks), so do you think it is okay to try and adapt an existing source to start off with? I read a poem and short story that I liked recently and I would like to try an adapt one of those. It's obviously never going to be published or performed or anything (so it's not going to be breaching any copyrights), so do you think it is okay to start off with adapting one of those to get a feel of play writing and then try to write something based on an original idea, or should I try harder to think of an original idea to start with.

I don't know what to do.
